lost CD-rom drives
One a recent boot I noticed that both my CD Drives the DVD and CD writer were not working. On the boot up, it does identify that the DVD is connected on an IDE connection and the Writer which is on a Scusi card. On looking in the device Manager, I note that both drives are marked with the yellow question mark.

I've
never seen a CD/DVD drive with faster than ATA66 and most at ATA33. You didn't say what HD's you have but I would guess they're at least ATA/UDMA100 or 133. I don't know enough about the tech spec's but I could see the op/sys fighting the speed variant even if they were all HD's.

Essentially, I believe, that after downloading and installing the updates from Iomega for the 4 proggies that came on the Tools CD, I rebooted and for about 10 days got stuck in Safe Mode. From that time forward, A stayed A, C stayed C, and F(Zip drive) became B. I lost D and E (my CD and CD-RW).

The most likely culprit can be multiple drivers in Windows. Reboot into safe mode and under Control Panel - System - Device Manager delete all of the CD ROM drivers.
