Lost CD Drive Needs More Help, Please

But no cd and no way of reloading up the cd drive is there?

Then after a machine restart my two CD drives are gone (not shown in Windows Explorer). In Device Manager they *do* show however, but the icons have a yellow exclamation mark, indicating trouble. The text amounts to (Code 31) "Windows 2000 could not load the correct drivers for this device".

ALSO LOST MY CD DRIVES ON XP!!!!!!!!
For some reason, my system has stopped finding the CD drive (Sony CDU5211) on the secondary IDE master (no slave present either). I know it's not the cable nor drive because all of my other operating systems find the drive just fine (multi-boot system). What needs re-adjusting? TIA Pete --

I can't as they're all on CD and my CD drives aren't being recognized. I tried right clicking on "my computer" and it gave me some weird error message about some rundll something or other missing. Regedit cannot be found. I checked the BIOS and the D and E drives are not showing up there.

In any event, My Computer and Windows Explorer now shows A, B, C, D, E and F drives as they were originally!!! I hope this means progress and we are getting close... Unfortunately they don't work yet. My first thought was to back up those 600MB of files and to check my W98 CD for drivers or info on the IDE

... will check although don't think this is the problem. The cables have a noth on the plug so it's difficult/impossible to fix the wrong way. Another thing to check is that if the old cable was a "Cable Select" cable, and if the new cable isn't, then you need to jumper the drives as master/slave instead. RwP.

Also try disabling the controller on the sound card, as a last resort (and just to see if it works) try plugging the drive into the controller on the soundcard (assuming it is an IDE controller).
